MONEY & GEMSTONES
[HOME] [LOOK] [WALK] [MAP WEB]

GOLD SOVEREIGNS (s)1s = 10r
SILVER ROYALS (r)10r = 1s
The combined amount of all possible money that can be picked up from Caches and Enemies in the game is 17.735 Gold and 4 Silver! Caches contain 8245 Gold and 4944 Silver, Enemies hold 8785 Gold and 2110 Silver. (Inluded are Enemies, whose bodies can not be searched after combat, but who can technically be robbed by using the Nightfingers Spell.)

Gemstones should be sold, not bought! A shopkeeper will buy Gemstones from you, and then offer them for sale at extravagant prices. Prices can differ substantially from one shop to another. For example, a 100% RUBY can be sold for 86.6 in one shop (worst), 810.0 in another shop (best). The below table shows how wildly this can vary. The GREEN NUMBERS show the number of Gems available in the game, Caches on the left, Enemies on the right.

The combined value of the above 213 Gems is, of course, quite impossible to compute realistically. They range from 1% to 100%, and the prices vary from Shop to Shop. Most of them can not possibly be sold at the highest possible price, and some of them can, indeed, never be sold. But we can do an approximation. Let us suppose that all these Gems are sold at the Average Price shown in the table above. Then we achieve the following results:

Shells (84) 227.5
Moredhel Brooches (38) 2563.2
Rubies (55) 9590.4
Emeralds (29) 6711.8
Diamonds (7) 5816.4
GRAND TOTAL 24909.3

Add this to the Money above, and we've reached a grand total of 42644.7! Of course it must be mentioned that some of the above riches can only be obtained in the last two Chapters of the game, when Money is totally irrelevant!

Below, I have compiled a simplified Gem-Selling Guide, which may be of help to the dedicated player. I've used a 100% Emerald in order to illustrate the Shop differences. The (YELLOW) number is the price you will get, if you sell this Gem. I've not bothered to list all the Shops' names, preferring the names of Cities and Towns where the Shops are located (more easily remembered). Some Shops are located "in the middle of nowhere", and are therefore quoted by name.

For easier reference, I've classified the Shops by ZONES (see MAP WEB).

ZONE 1 Accessible in Chapters 1,2,3,6
YABON * LAMUT * ZUN * HAWK'S HOLLOW * LORIEL * TYR-SOG

Hawk's Hollow is by far the best place for selling Gems here (553.5). LaMut (385.0) and Tyr-Sog (384.0) give near-average prices. Don't sell Gems in Loriel (304.5) or Zun (287.5) unless you have
to - Hawk's Hollow is close.

ZONE 2 Accessible in Chapters 1,2,3,6
QUESTOR'S VIEW * SARTH * KRONDOR * TANNEURS * EGGLEY * SILBAN

Sarth (408.0) and Krondor's Touchstone Gems (405.0) are your best bets here. Rygate & Supply (360.0), Tanneurs (352.0), and Krondor's Sign of the Eagle (350.0) all give near-average prices. Don't sell Gems at Morgan Hurley's (276.0) or Questor's View (180.0) - Sarth is close. [The closest Shop with better prices than any of these Shops is in Hawk's Hollow (Zone 1).]

ZONE 3 Accessible in Chapters 1,2,3,6
DARKMOOR * MALAC'S CROSS * NIA'S GOODS * SILDEN * SLOOP * ROMNEY

Obviously Guild War Romney (1080.0) beats all other Shops. This is not possible until Chapter 3, but the offer will last until you've ended the War. Nia's Goods is next best (429.0 in Chapter 1, and 530.0 in Chapter 2 or later, after you've performed her Quest). Sloop is above average (412.5), Darkmoor close to the average (364.5). Don't sell Gems in Silden (305.0), Malac's Cross (273.0) and especially not in Romney before/after the Guild War (180.0).

ZONE 4 Accessible in Chapters 1,2,3,6
PRANK'S STONE * CAVALL KEEP * KENTING RUSH

In version 1.01 Prank's Stone is too good to be true (1053.0)! Sadly this is not so in version 1.02 (300.0). Kenting Rush offers a good price (553.5), Dabeh's Fanciful Trinkets comes next (418.0), and Et Cetera Goods is near the average (387.5). Don't sell Gems in Prank's Stone [version 1.02] (300.0), or Cavall Keep (202.5) - better Shops are nearby.

ZONE 5 Accessible in Chapters 1,2,3 and 5 (partially)
ELDPOINT * HIGHCASTLE * WOLFRAM * DENCAMP * NORTHWARDEN
ZONE 6 (E) Accessible in Chapter 5
RAGLAM

Dencamp is generally the best choice here (475.0). All other Shops in the area are below average. Don't sell Gems in Wolfram (270.0), Eldpoint (264.0), Northwarden (241.5), Highcastle (150.0), or Scavenger's Meet (115.5), unless you have no other choice. In Chapter 5, you can go to Raglam via this area. The prices here are actually better than the Dencamp ones (495.0).

ZONE 6 (W) Accessible in Chapter 4
ARMENGAR * HARLECH * SAR-SARGOTH * CAERN * WYKE

Children of the Green Heart is one of the best in the game (632.5), but awkwardly placed. To begin with you will probably be forced to sell Gems at Sar-Sargoth (325.0). By the time you reach Armengar (325.0), you are very close to Children of the Green Heart, so if you still have Gems to sell, don't sell them in Armengar. Don't sell Gems in Wyke (268.4) or Caern (140.0), unless you have no other choice.

ZONE 7 Accessible in Chapters [1, 2,] 3, 6, 7
DIMWOOD

The Fife & Laurel is acceptable (450.0), but will not be accessible until Chapter 3 (after the performance of a Quest). In Chapter 7 this is the only Shop available (if the Quest has been performed).

ZONE 8 Accessible in Chapter 6
ELVANDAR

The Caldara Shop is below average (287.5). It is, however, the only Shop in the Elvandar area that will buy Gems.

A table of the top 14 should be an effective guide to your best choices:
